The Tribal Society at a Juncture: To Move Forward or Stay Backward

An introduction to the tribal society: We have come a long since our days of early civilization. Modern India cannot think without computers and the internet, smart phones, I-pod. The aeronautics industries and space research institutes are engaged in making trips and setting up space stations in the space. We tend to look forward to different applications on our mobile phones and download different games on our computers and our mobiles.

Can the modern India think beyond the different contemporary equipments and appliances used in their day to day lives. Starting with a up to date education right from the childhood the metropolitan child goes on to earn for himself a position as a dynamic man in the society.

Yet beyond all the gloss of the city life there lurks a society which is backward, deprived of all facilities and is dipped in poverty. This society constitutes the various tribal sections in the country of India. Despite India gaining her independence for over half a century, the tribal section of our society have not been able to do away with the shackles of the society that is binding them down. There are a number of tribes across India and about 8. 14% of the total population of the country is composed of tribes and the figure of rural education is severe in respect to the population. The culture and traditions of the tribes vary from one another based on region of origin.

The tribal people are the oldest inhabitants of the country and we can say that they are forbearers of Indian culture and tradition. According to a report in 1970s, the Tribal Sub Plan or the TSP came to distribute various resources among the tribal over a period of time. It has to be mentioned here in passing that even after decades going by the Tribes Advisory Council has widely remained a consultative body rather than being a truly advisory body.

NGOs at help for the benefit of the tribes: It is at Friends of Tribal Society, a NGO in India, where we try to bring the tribal groups into the mainstream section of our society. The Friends of Tribal Society is a non- governmental and voluntary organization which basically is concerned with the education of the tribal and other rural population all over the country. We, an Indian NGO came into existence in the year 1989 at Kolkata, and gradually spread all over the country in about twenty seven locations.

It is our dream to reach every nook and corner of the country and spread the message of education among the backward section of the society.

The tribes and the backward section of the society are also benefitted by the support that we an Indian NGO provide for vocational training and thus helping them have a support system of their own. We are an Indian NGO who look into the empowerment of the society by making them conscious of their rights in the contemporary society.
